Parents everywhere, rejoice. Don’t Blink by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and illustrated by David Roberts is the bedtime book that will trick your kids into falling asleep!
Okay, okay. It’s not like a miracle book that lulls children into a full night’s sleep.
But it IS a book that targets reluctant sleepers and uses an interactive storyline to lure them towards actually sleeping. Here’s the official synopsis:
Here’s how it works: if you can avoid getting to the end of this book, you can avoid bedtime, simple as that. (It’s a pretty sweet deal, actually.) But each time you blink, you have to turn a page. Those are just the rules. So whatever you do, DON’T BLINK! Kids love a challenge, and you can bet they’ll do their darndest to rise to the one set out in Don’t Blink!…especially when bedtime is on the line!
The book is so charmingly illustrated — with later pages even showing the page as if seen through increasingly droopy eyelids — and fun lettering to emphasize the interactive story. Kids are invited to AVOID blinking through a variety of tricks and cheats, and inevitably are doomed to fail because … well, blinking. And as the story progresses, the narrator owl — and your kids at home — will know that bedtime is inevitably getting closer and closer.
I found this book charming all on its own, but it was even more fun reading it with my 2.5-year-old niece and seeing how she interacted with the goofy prompts. (She’s also on a major owl kick right now, so that was a bonus.)
Don’t Blink is a charming and funny bedtime book that even the most reluctant sleepers will find delightful. Look for it in stores now.
