Divergent by Veronica Roth – Faction Focus: Amity

All this week we are focusing on each of the five factions within Divergent by Veronica Roth. Today, we turn our attention to Amity: The Peaceful.

Here is what Veronica wrote about Amity on her website:

AMITY: 1. friendship; peaceful harmony.

2. mutual understanding and a peaceful relationship, especially between nations; peace; accord.

3. cordiality

It’s not just about banjos and apple-picking. It’s about cultivating strong relationships and trying to understand each other. Oh, Amity.

Here’s more about what the Amity value based on their manifesto, what they call “Conversations of Peace”:

• Trust
• Self-Sufficiency
• Forgiveness
• Kindness
• Involvement

As you can see, the Amity aren’t just a bunch of peace-loving hippies. They value interpersonal relationships — how people relate on an individual, personal level. And as supporters of “self-sufficiency,” in the Divergent society, the Amity are the folks in charge of agriculture.
