I’m so excited today to be hosting a stop on the official blog tour for To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo, a dark standalone retelling of The Little Mermaid that includes a pirate prince and a siren princess with stabby tendencies. The book follows these two characters and the quest that makes them unlikely allies. (See my full review HERE!)
To celebrate, I pulled together a Styled by Books outfit inspired by To Kill a Kingdom. Read on for photos, details, and more about this fantastic book.
Although I have plenty of piratey gear, I didn’t want this outfit to get too costumey – so I went for a more subtle ensemble inspired by the siren princess, Lira. I started with a key accessory that I think makes this outfit work, and that’s this stunning tentacle key necklace from Aspiring Artista – which reflects the tentacles on the cover of the book, and that belong to Lira’s evil sea queen mother.
Since Lira is still a princess — she has a more traditional mermaid tail, like her fellow sirens, so I went with my mermaid scale print skirt as the other signature item in this ensemble. I actually made this skirt myself (with fabric I found at a local fabric store a couple years ago), so you can’t buy this exact one – but I did find a mermaid scale-print skirt available online from Hot Topic.
Since I didn’t want the outfit to go too Disney princess-y, I paired it with a dark top, tights, and woven belt — wanting to reflect the dark tones in the actual cover itself, and the nature of the story. (Okay, normally I probably wouldn’t wear tights with this outfit. But it was cold AF the day we took these photos, so there was no chance I was going out bare-legged.)
And though it’s hard to see in the photo, I did throw on both a mermaid/ocean-themed ring and a pirate/skull ring to emphasize the mermaid/pirate vibes going on in the book.
I loved so much about this book … Pirates! Mermaids! A standalone fantasy! Look for it in stores on March 6th. Here is the full synopsis:
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe most—a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian’s heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever.
The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby—it’s his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she’s more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind’s greatest enemy?
