The classic Rapunzel story gets a girl powered twist in Bethan Woollvin’s clever retelling – no prince needed.
The wicked witch has Rapunzel trapped – but not for long!
Rapunzel lives all alone in a tall, dark tower. Under the threat of a witch’s fearsome curse, the poor girl seems doomed to a life in captivity. But is Rapunzel frightened? Oh no, not she!
I adored Woollvin’s take on the Little Red Riding Hood story that came out last year, and Rapunzel is just as delightful (if not more so). I would honestly be A-okay with it if Woollvin wanted to just systematically retell all my favorite fairy tales in her signature witty manner, complete with a little dose of age-appropriate dark humor.
The highly stylized images make magic when combined with Woollvin’s writing, working together in a way that seems effortless to tell the story of a clever and sassy Rapunzel – who takes matters into her own hands to defeat the witch and gain her freedom. She’s smart and inventive and just the kind of roll model you want for young kids.
Rapunzel is in stores now. Here’s a peek at the adorable book trailer:

I would like to read a retelling of Thumbelina.
Besides Rapunzel, I’ve always like Rumplestiltskin.
Well, if we’re breaking the damsel-in-distress theme, how about Cinderella escaping the tyranny at home for a high paying job at the palace.
Puss N Boots.
Snow white would be a fun one.
