Today on the Venturess blog tour, author Betsy Cornwell stops by to talk about the first time she saw her book cover – plus keep reading to learn more about this gorgeous book and your chance to win a copy!
Venturess is the first book whose cover I helped create, if in a very small way. My first two books, Tides and Mechanica, both turned out to have covers that I really love, but I heard nothing about them until they appeared, shiny and complete, in my inbox about a year before each book’s release date. Now, I’m not complaining about that – like I said, I really love those covers. But it was a special feeling to get to add my input to the cover of Venturess.
My first and biggest request was to see Jules, my heroine’s mechanical horse, on the jacket image. He’s a contender for my favorite character in the series, and I thought ‘steampunk horse!’ was a good selling point. The final cover even depicts the particular scene I had requested.
Opening that fateful “here’s your book cover!” email is always a little terrifying. That was still true for Venturess, but at least I had the confidence of knowing that the artist who made Mechanica’s gorgeous cover, Manuel Sumberac, had returned for the companion novel. He had done such incredible work on my last book that I was pretty convinced anything he had in mind for Venturess would be fantastic.
And it was. My first impression of the cover focused on the rich, saturated jewel colors, just like those on Mechanica’s cover but a little greener and brighter – just like Faerie, the setting of most of this book, is a little greener and brighter than the old country of Mechanica’s Esting.
Then I saw Jules, flying. And my beloved heroine riding him through the sky, in front of a giant, glowing full moon, with the Faerie coastline below them. Oh, my heart.
The title lettering, too, is striking and beautiful: it’s steampunk-y but delicate and meticulous. It matches Mechanica’s typeface but feels a little more dynamic, which is perfect for Venturess.
The hardcover is even prettier than the digital image, for real. It’s so shiny. That moon is nearly metallic.
I love the cover of Venturess, and I’m very grateful that the team at Clarion Books offered to hear my suggestions. I’m anticipating seeing the cover of my girl-Robin-Hood retelling, The Forest Queen, any time now . . . and I feel pretty confident that my fourth book will look as lovely as my previous three. I know I’m so very lucky to feel that way.
Young inventor Nicolette Lampton is living her own fairy tale happy ending. She’s free of her horrible step-family, running a successful business, and is uninterested in marrying the handsome prince, Fin. Instead, she, Fin, and their friend Caro venture to the lush land of Faerie, where they seek to put an end to the bloody war their kingdom is waging. Mechanical armies and dark magic await them as they uncover devastating secrets about the past and fight for a real, lasting happily-ever-after for two troubled countries—and for themselves.

Nicolette’s awful stepsisters call her “Mechanica” to demean her, but the nickname fits: she learned to be an inventor at her mother’s knee. Her mom is gone now, though, and the Steps have turned her into a servant in her own home.
But on her sixteenth birthday, Nicolette discovers a secret workshop in the cellar and begins to dare to imagine a new life for herself. Could the mysterious books and tools hidden there—and the mechanical menagerie, led by a tiny metal horse named Jules—be the key to escaping her dreary existence? With a technological exposition and royal ball on the horizon, the timing might just be perfect for Nicolette to earn her freedom at last.
Gorgeous prose and themes of social justice and family shine in this richly imagined Cinderella retelling about an indomitable inventor who finds her prince . . . but realizes she doesn’t want a fairy tale happy ending after all.
