Roar by Cora Carmack: Styled by Books

I am insanely excited about today’s Styled by Books post, featuring Roar by Cora Carmack. I haven’t had a chance to read this book yet (it’s on my TBR), but:

  1. LOOK AT THAT COVER. Just look at it.
  2. My friends Ali and Brie (both fellow bloggers & bookstagrammers) were on the street team for Roar, and have been raving about it for months now.
  3. It’s a fantasy YA set in a world where people harness the power & magic of weather.

If you’re a regular here at Novel Novice, then you probably know that I rope my husband into being my photographer for these Styled by Books shoots. I guess he really liked this cover, too, because as I was getting dressed, he decided to help style my ensemble. In fact, it was his idea to layer two belts (which turned out pretty cool, I think) and he added in the dagger from his pirate costume collection.

My dress is from Lane Bryant – but I got it last year, so it’s no longer available – but they do have some really cute other white, flowy dresses for summer right now. The sweater is from Torrid. The belts are from who knows where; I’ve had the brown one forever, and the black one is actually my husband’s!

My necklace, earrings, and right-hand ring are all from Charming Charlie.

I also wanted to feature some of the amazing Roar-inspired candles from Stub Tail Candle Co. My favorite is “Fog,” but honestly, they all smell SO amazing. You can use NOVELNOVICE to save 10% on any order. (And they have other bookish-inspired candles, too!)

Here’s more about Roar:

In a land ruled and shaped by violent magical storms, power lies with those who control them.

Aurora Pavan comes from one of the oldest Stormling families in existence. Long ago, the ungifted pledged fealty and service to her family in exchange for safe haven, and a kingdom was carved out from the wildlands and sustained by magic capable of repelling the world’s deadliest foes. As the sole heir of Pavan, Aurora’s been groomed to be the perfect queen. She’s intelligent and brave and honorable. But she’s yet to show any trace of the magic she’ll need to protect her people.

To keep her secret and save her crown, Aurora’s mother arranges for her to marry a dark and brooding Stormling prince from another kingdom. At first, the prince seems like the perfect solution to all her problems. He’ll guarantee her spot as the next queen and be the champion her people need to remain safe. But the more secrets Aurora uncovers about him, the more a future with him frightens her. When she dons a disguise and sneaks out of the palace one night to spy on him, she stumbles upon a black market dealing in the very thing she lacks—storm magic. And the people selling it? They’re not Stormlings. They’re storm hunters.

Legend says that her ancestors first gained their magic by facing a storm and stealing part of its essence. And when a handsome young storm hunter reveals he was born without magic, but possesses it now, Aurora realizes there’s a third option for her future besides ruin or marriage.

She might not have magic now, but she can steal it if she’s brave enough.

Challenge a tempest. Survive it. And you become its master.

  1. This is such a fun feature! I love when people are able to take creative inspiration from book cover art. I’ll admit that Roar has caught my eye lately because the cover is so gorgeous, but I’m finding it harder to engage with fatasy novels lately!
