Queen of Hearts / Blood of Wonderland: Styled by Books

Styled by Books goes to Wonderland today, to feature Queen of Hearts and Blood of Wonderland by Colleen Oakes, the first two books in a YA trilogy inspired by Alice in Wonderland. (Book 3, War of the Cards, comes  out in November!)

For this Styled by Books photo shoot, I took inspiration from the covers themselves – which are all inspired by classic playing card designs, as well as some classic Alice in Wonderland details. As such, I stuck with a classic black, white, and red color scheme.

I really wish my rose bushes (which I’m sitting next to here) were blooming at the time, but I took these photos several weeks ago – and after an especially cold, harsh winter, my roses all bloomed very late this year. (They are in full bloom now, but my husband would kill me if I asked him to retake these photos!) But you get the idea: Queen of Hearts. Roses.

For my outfit, I paired a heart-print top from eShakti with a fabulous tulle “tutu” skirt from Torrid. I dug up this fabulous white rose headband from my accessories bin to top off the look.

Adorable laughing photos: what happens when your husband takes your blog photos & cracks jokes.

I normally keep my makeup focused more on my eyes, and stick with pretty neutral/nude lip colors – but for this one I had to throw on a bright red lip. This is “Ruby Ripple” from Burt’s Bees, and is one of the best red lip colors I’ve ever found for my coloring. (I’m also just a huge fan of this Burt’s Bees lipstick in general. I have several colors.)

Also let us know other books you’d love to see get the “Styled by Books” treatment!

Here’s more about the first book in the series:

Only queens with hearts can bleed.

This is not the story of the Wonderland we know. Alice has not fallen down a rabbit hole. There is no all-knowing cat with a taunting smile. This is a Wonderland where beneath each smile lies a secret, each tart comes with a demand, and only prisoners tell the truth.

Dinah is the princess who will one day reign over Wonderland. She has not yet seen the dark depths of her kingdom; she longs only for her father’s approval and a future with the boy she loves. But when a betrayal breaks her heart and threatens her throne, she is launched into Wonderland’s dangerous political game. Dinah must stay one step ahead of her cunning enemies or she’ll lose not just the crown but her head.

Evil is brewing in Wonderland and maybe, most frighteningly, in Dinah herself.

This is not a story of happily ever after.

This is the story of the Queen of Hearts.
