Our part of the blog tour scavenger hunt for The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell continues today with a character profile, PLUS your latest clue in the contest scavenger hunt. Be sure to keep reading for more details & additional opportunities to win! But first, let’s meet Tilly …
I was born in the city, into a family that hadn’t seen a strong affinity in generations, and they would have rather I didn’t have one. I could have tried to hide myself, what I was. I could have stayed with them, married the boy down the hall, and had a quiet life…pretending. But I left home because I met Leena Ashear, who told me about Dolph and the work he was doing in the Bowery. Dolph and Leena gave me a home in the Bella Strega, and in turn, I’ve done what I can for them. It’s not much, but it’s what I have to give, and I wouldn’t turn back now for anything.
The moment when dough turns from slack to tight and smooth, when I know the bread will be right. The quiet moment before everyone clamors into my kitchen. Friendships that feel like the meaning of life itself.
Anxiety. Angst. Turmoil. Fighting of any kind. The danger people I love put themselves in all too often.
I work in the kitchens of the Strega, preparing food for Dolph and those who live in the rooms above the saloon. My cooking is only one part of what I do for Dolph, though. The Devil’s Own are unique in the Bowery—the have among their numbers those who might otherwise be adversaries. My affinity allows me to calm the hot tempers that often clash amongst the crew, to give comfort and strength to those who fear. It might not seem like much, but at least I am not living as a shadow of myself.
To a hungry man, all that is bitter tastes sweet.
Scavenger Hunt Number:
Steal the book.
Save the future.
In modern day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magic—the Mageus—live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their power—and often their lives.
Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.
But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.
