It’s no secret that I love the fictionalized world of pirates. (My husband & I even go to a pirate-themed ball every year here in Portland.* I mean, I basically married a pirate.) But not all fictional pirates are created equal — and it’s hard to compare to Jack Sparrow these days. But Alosa really holds her own, and Levenseller has delivered the female Captain Jack we’ve been waiting for.

Alosa is bold, brash, clever, and my god, can she hold her own in a sword fight. She is a fearsome pirate, and a bold heroine, and I absolutely adored her, and I think you will, too. It’s easy to root for her, as she finds clever ways around her rival pirate captors and matches wits with the arresting first mate Riden; but for all her smarts and talent, she is still a vulnerable character. And for all their rule-breaking, even pirates seem to have misguided notions about a woman’s place, and Alosa is having none of that. (Thank you, very much.)

But the point is, even in all its fictionalized glory, Daughter of the Pirate King still offers something for readers to relate to: a woman fighting for equality; a daughter’s search for her father’s approval; a conflict between the heart’s desires.

And that heart’s desires? Well, it definitely includes some swoon-inducing romance, as Alosa and Riden toe the line between enemies and lovers.

Daughter of the Pirate King also serves up some surprise twists along the way — and even I didn’t see some of these coming, which made the reading experience all the more delightful. At the end of the day, this is just an incredibly fun read. Look for it in stores February 28th.
