Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

Be sure to keep reading after today’s review for your chance to win a copy of this book + learn more about our takeover week, going on now.

A kick-ass lady pirate, a steamy star-crossed romance, and a swashbuckling saga worthy of Captain Jack Sparrow himself. Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller is the perfect, piratical adventure to kick your winter-time blues away and whisk you away to adventure on the high seas.

A 17-year-old pirate captain intentionally allows herself to get captured by enemy pirates in this thrilling YA adventure.

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map—the key to a legendary treasure trove—seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

Debut author Tricia Levenseller blends action, adventure, romance, and a little bit of magic into a thrilling YA pirate tale.

It’s no secret that I love the fictionalized world of pirates. (My husband & I even go to a pirate-themed ball every year here in Portland.* I mean, I basically married a pirate.) But not all fictional pirates are created equal — and it’s hard to compare to Jack Sparrow these days. But Alosa really holds her own, and Levenseller has delivered the female Captain Jack we’ve been waiting for.

Alosa is bold, brash, clever, and my god, can she hold her own in a sword fight. She is a fearsome pirate, and a bold heroine, and I absolutely adored her, and I think you will, too. It’s easy to root for her, as she finds clever ways around her rival pirate captors and matches wits with the arresting first mate Riden; but for all her smarts and talent, she is still a vulnerable character. And for all their rule-breaking, even pirates seem to have misguided notions about a woman’s place, and Alosa is having none of that. (Thank you, very much.)

But the point is, even in all its fictionalized glory, Daughter of the Pirate King still offers something for readers to relate to: a woman fighting for equality; a daughter’s search for her father’s approval; a conflict between the heart’s desires.

And that heart’s desires? Well, it definitely includes some swoon-inducing romance, as Alosa and Riden toe the line between enemies and lovers.

Daughter of the Pirate King also serves up some surprise twists along the way — and even I didn’t see some of these coming, which made the reading experience all the more delightful. At the end of the day, this is just an incredibly fun read. Look for it in stores February 28th.

  1. Not only does the book’s plot sound super cool, but Alosa seems AMAZING!!!! She’s like a combination of Delilah Bard from A Darker Shade of Magic and Safiya from Truthwitch. I’m so excited to find another strong female lead.

  2. This is great, Sara! I’d definitely be interested in reading this. I actually have a pirate ancestor, which my sister thinks is super cool. I’m not so sure—I like the fictionalized world of pirates, but real life pirates are something else.

  3. I always love Pirate stories because Pirates always have great banter and they are bad ass but have this protective family side that I love and anyways sword play and ships are always awesome and I am mostly referring to Pirates of the Caribbean because I have never come across a Pirate book especially like this one and it sounds so incredible! I can’t wait to be able to read (: ❤

  4. A pirate themed ball sounds incredible! Now I’m even more tempted to visit Portland at some point 🙂 I definitely preordered this book as soon as I heard about it- I cannot get enough pirates!
