The Light Between Oceans: Bluray Party + Review

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, no doubt looooove is on the brain. If you’re in search of an historical, dramatic love story with a gut-wrenching twist, than you need look no further than The Light Between Oceans, available NOW on Bluray, Digital and DVD, and based on the best-selling novel by M.L. Stedman.

The Light Between Oceans stars Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as a lighthouse keeper and his wife, who live a remote life off the coast of Australia. When a baby washes ashore after two failed pregnancies, Vikander’s character convinces her husband the child is a gift, and the couple raises the infant as their own. Their happy life is disrupted when a woman (Rachel Weisz) begins to suspect that her daughter – believed lost at sea – may be this very child.

Many thanks to Disney Home Entertainment for sending me a copy of the movie and the book, as well as a set of goodies to host a movie night with my friends:

  • Tissue packets
  • Candles
  • Tea tins
  • Mugs
  • Bath bombs
  • Slippers

The items were all meant to help my friends & I find comfort after the heartbreaking movie — although, I will be honest. Not a single one of us cried! Maybe we have cold, black hearts, the lot of us?

Despite the lack of tears, we thoroughly enjoyed the movie — which was beautifully filmed (gah, the scenery is GORGEOUS), wonderfully acted, and very smartly written and directed. It gave us lots to think about and discuss. In fact, we actually paused the movie a few times to get snacks or take bathroom breaks — but ended up having long discussions about the characters and plot in between, as well.

In fact, we spent so much time taking breaks to discuss things that we ran out of time to watch all the bonus features that come with the Bluray. We need to reschedule, because they sound pretty great:

  • Bringing The Light to Life – For weeks, the cast and crew of “The Light Between Oceans” lived in trailers on Cape Campbell, an isolated region of New Zealand, to film the movie adaptation of the best-selling novel. This documentary chronicles the unique approach and shooting style of director Derek Cianfrance and the production journey that inspired Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz to fully embody their characters and explore the power and depths of love.

  • Audio Commentary – View the film accompanied by an in-depth and thoughtful conversation between director Derek Cianfrance and his film studies professor Phil Solomon.

  • Lighthouse Keeper – The filmmakers, cast and Cape Campbell Lighthouse inspector/maintainer Rob Sword share the history of the lighthouse and explain the typical duties a lighthouse keeper like Tom Sherbourne would have during an assignment on Janus Island.

Many thanks again to Disney Home Entertainment for sending us all of the goodies … we had a BLAST watching the movie together, and wiggling our toes together in our matching slippers.
