Today, we are so happy to be helping spread the word about World Read Aloud Day — or WRAD, for short!
This event is taking place all day today — March 7th, 2012 — across the globe. We’re joining others to urge you to take your love of reading to the streets. Be an advocate for literacy and the power of the written word.
Here’s more about WRAD and how you can participate:
On March 7th, 2012, LitWorld, a global literacy organization based in New York City, will be celebrating World Read Aloud Day. World Read Aloud Day is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people. World Read Aloud Day motivates children, teens, and adults worldwide to celebrate the power of words, especially those words that are shared from one person to another, and creates a community of readers advocating for every childās right to a safe education and access to books and technology. By raising our voices together on this day we show the worldās children that we support their future: that they have the right to read, to write, and to share their words to change the world.

To celebrate, I hopped in front of the web cam (eek!) and read aloud from one of my recent favorite anthologies, The Chronicles of Harris BurdickĀ by Chris Van Allsburg. Here I am reading the short story “Under the Rug” by Jon Scieska: (And apparently my old theater days and a previous job working at a daycare shows, as I tend to ham it up while reading out loud.)

I didn’t know this day existed, but I like the idea!
