Sara’s Most-Anticipated YA Sequels of 2012

There are a TON of new YA books coming out in 2012 (we posted about a lot of them here) — and quite a few of this year’s new releases are sequels, or new additions to a series. Below, you’ll find my top 5 most-anticipated sequels of 2012.

A Want So Wicked by Suzanne Young

I *adored* A Need So Beautiful, so I was overwhelmed by the fact that I liked the sequel even better. Yes, I got to read an early version of A Want So Wicked already, and it is in fact even better than the first book! Suzanne has outdone herself with this novel, taking everything she created in A Need So Beautiful and taking it to a whole new level. If you haven’t read A Need So Beautiful yet, do so immediately — simply to prepare yourself for A Want So Wicked. Trust me. You’ll be glad you did.

Rebel Heart (Dustlands #2) by Moira Young

I swooned over Blood Red Road last year (even — gasp! — calling it better than The Hunger Games), so it’s understandable that I’m anticipating the second book in this stunning and unique series. One of the things I loved about Blood Red Road was that it did feel self-contained — but the ending definitely left room for more adventures for Saba and her friends, so I can’t wait to see where this next book takes them.

Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

True, I’m excited about City of Lost Souls — the fifth book in Cassie’s Mortal Instruments series — but I’m far more interested in getting my hands on Clockwork Princess, the third & supposedly final book in her Infernal Devices trilogy. These Victorian, Steampunk prequels to The Mortal Instruments are definitely my favorites of Cassie’s books. In 2011, Clockwork Prince blew me away — convincing me it was Cassie’s best book yet. I am eagerly anticipating this third installment and can’t wait to see what happens to all my favorite (and not-so-favorite) characters!

Black Heart by Holly Black

Another conclusion to one of my favorite trilogies … I am absolutely obsessed with Holly’s Curse Workers series and can’t get enough of this “mobsters & magic” universe she has created. I hope Holly will continue this world beyond Black Heart, but in the meantime I am eagerly anticipating the next step in Cassel’s story.

(However, I am NOT excited about the cover redesign.)

The Pledge #2 by Kimberly Derting

Even untitled, I can’t wait for this new book by Kim Derting. I’ve long been a fan of her Body Finder series, but The Pledge just blew me away — and I was so thrilled when Kim announced that it would be the first in a trilogy. The first book was great as a self-contained novel, but I wanted MORE from this world and these characters, especially with the set-up Kim gave us in the book’s epilogue. I’ll definitely be stalking my mailbox in search of the untitled sequel to The Pledge.

Runners Up:

These are the OTHER sequels coming out in 2012 that didn’t quite make the top 5, but just barely — because honestly, I can’t wait to devour these books, either:

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer #2 by Michelle Hodkin … I don’t know the new book’s actual title yet, but I MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. Mara Dyer ends on a killer cliff-hanger, and daaaamn, I’m dying to know what happens next.

Jessica Rules the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey … Technically, I’ve already read this book because I snagged an ARC early — but since it comes out in 2012 (this month), I’m including it on my list. I adored Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, and the sequel is just as sweet and charming and adorable. It’s also really great to see the romantic relationship between Jessica and Lucius mature.

Underworld by Meg Cabot … I was totally swept up by Abandon. This modernized retelling of the Persephone myth was completely addictive, and I simply must know what happens to these characters now.

Enshadowed by Kelly Creagh … I’ll admit, I felt a bit lost at the end of Nevermore, but I’m still completely in love with this Edgar Allan Poe-inspired YA paranormal romance. The sequel has been a bit delayed (because, well, these things happen) — but I’m honestly chomping at the bit to pick it up!

Ashes #2 by Ilsa J. Bick … The ending of Ashes nearly killed me. What a twist! What a cliff hanger! Gah!!!! This book had lots of twists and turns, but the biggest really came in at the last page. I’ve been muttering curses under my breath pretty much ever since, but in a good way because Bick has sucked me into her world and I just can’t escape. Nor do I really want to. Bring on book 2, please!
