Writing Contest: Literary Lovers Mash-up!

Spinebreakers in the UK is hosting an awesome contest
, asking you to write a short, 200-word explosive love scene between two unlikely literary heroes:

What would have happened if Tess of the D’Urbervilles had met Edward?

Or Mr Darcy had fallen in love with Bella?

Or, come to think of it, the world was rocked by the love affair between Adrian Mole and Juliet?

The contest is open to UK residents 18 & under.

I absolutely love this idea, so much so that I’m taking the challenge for myself — even though I can’t enter the contest.

But let’s go a step further. I’m stealing this brilliant contest idea (er, borrowing?) for Novel Novice!

It’s just for fun — but I might send out some Novel Novice exclusive bookmarks (coming soon!) to some of the best entries:

So here’s the deal:

* Write a short scene in which two unlikely literary heroes meet for the first time

* Keep it 500 words or less!

* YES, spelling & grammar count — so proofread!

* I’ll give you the next month to get your creative juices flowing!

* YES, you can enter more than once!

* E-mail your entries to sara.novelnovice@comcast.net

* Entries are due by midnight (PST) on Sunday, March 28th.

Anyone can enter — any ages, any countries (though I can only send bookmarks to folks in the U.S., sorry!) BUT, I will post all the best stories here on Novel Novice for everyone to enjoy!

Check out Spinebreakers’ literary couples list for inspiration!

Questions? Leave ’em in the comments & I’ll reply!

  1. Ahh! This sounds so awesome! I already have 1 idea and I’m working on coming up with more. Although I already know I’m going to have a problem keeping it under 500 words. hehe. I am too long winded. (i.e. ^^)

    1. We’ll still post your story if you send it to us for the contest! We just can’t mail bookmarks outside the U.S. … it’s just too darn expensive! Wish we could afford it, though …

  2. Is the contest that they meet or how they fall in love? The original post says meet… but the update on the ‘Beautiful Creatures Contest Winner Announced’ post says fall in love. I just wanted to be sure.
