I’ve been reading the Heartbreaker Bay series by Jill Shalvis for a couple of months now, and while I’ve been reading them all out of order (and still have a few to go), I’ve found myself growing to love these books the more I read them. Playing for Keeps, the newest book in the series, may be my favorite one yet.
If you’re planning on falling in love…
When it comes to the confident, charismatic Caleb Parker, Sadie Lane feels the spark—the kind that comes from rubbing each other the wrong way. She’s yoga pants, he’s a suit. She’s a tattoo artist, he’s a straight-laced mogul. But after they accidentally co-rescue an abandoned dog from a storm, Sadie sees a vulnerable side to the seemingly invincible hottie.
you’d better be sure…
Caleb doesn’t do emotions. Growing up the underdog, he’s learned the hard way to build up an impenetrable wall. Perfect for business. Disastrous for relationships. He’s never worried about it before—not until he finally gets behind Sadie’s armor and begins to fall.
… someone is there to catch you.
Both guarded and vulnerable, Sadie and Caleb are complete opposites. Or are they? Shocked at their undeniable connection, can they ever admit to wanting more? That all depends on what they’re each willing to risk.
I loved this unlikely pairing, and the blossoming romance between Sadie and Caleb — as they bond over co-parenting their new puppy — was just too sweet. Caleb’s earnest attraction to Sadie, and continued patience with her as she overcomes her fears and insecurities made me swoon at every turn.
Also, the co-parenting a puppy? Too adorable. Lollipop the dog kind of steals the show, as she worms her way into both her humans’ hearts — and helps them find their way into each other’s hearts.
There’s plenty of steamy romance within these pages, but the overall vibe was sweet and charming — and that’s just what I want in a rom-com reading experience.

Rom coms are my favorite because I need more laughter in my life as most people do. Plus, they make an excellent escape for me for a few hours.
Rom coms perfectly balance plot (romance) with humor.
Rom coms are a genre I know well because they end well and have a budding love interest or a deep, long-lasting one.
