Top 5 Cruel Characters+ The Cruel Prince Giveaway

Have you discovered the seductive world of The Cruel Prince by Holly Black yet? In stores now, this enchanting book will have you rooting for characters of questionable moral standing – which brings to mind certain other cruel or villainous characters I’ve loved before.

To celebrate The Cruel Prince, I’ve put together my list of Top 5 Favorite Cruel Characters – plus keep reading for your chance to win an amazing prize pack courtesy of The NOVL, including a copy of The Cruel Prince.

Moriarty

There’s something endlessly intriguing about the villain who matched wits with the iconic Sherlock Holmes, and no incarnation of this criminal mastermind has captured my attention more than the one portrayed by Andrew Scott in BBC’s Sherlock series. “Honey, you should see me in a crown.” Indeed!

Loki

I know I am one of many who adore this iconic Marvel villain, who occasionally does something good to help us block out his tendency towards mass murder. He’s so charming in his wickedness.

Alex Krycek

Not everyone is going to recognize this name immediately, but if you do, consider us fast friends. This villain from The X-Files was probably the first character I ever consciously acknowledged loving to hate. I was truly sad when he finally met his end on the series, and I still futilely hope he’ll show up again somehow on one of the rebooted episodes.

The Darkling

I only finally read the Grisha books a couple months ago, but I immediately understood everyone’s obsession with the Darkling. I knew he was evil, but I still loved him. And I’m still bitter about that tryst that never happened in the first book because of [SPOILER]. I feel deeply as though I was deprived of an evil sex scene, and I want it still.

Maleficent

There’s a lot of love for many of Disney’s villains, but it seems none more so than Maleficent. There’s just something delicious in her elegant wickedness.

By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue.

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him—and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

  1. Hi, Sara
    Great giveaway!
Where would we be without fairy tales? They teach, entertain, amuse and scare, and they inspire today’s authors to retell and expand on stories to fit today’s sensibilities and desires!

  2. My favorite cruel characters are: Queen Levana from the Lunar Chronicles, President Snow from The Hunger Games, and Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter (I can’t help it; I like pink and I love cats lol). Thanks!

  3. My favorite cruel character would have to be Kavinsky from The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. He has such an interesting and distinct voice and power that you want to know more about him!

  4. This is a tough one. There are some great cruel characters out there. For me I would have to say the Darkling as I just finished reading thr Grisha trilogy and while I hated some of the cruel things he did I saw why he was the way he was and really felt for him. Another truly cruel character that I really love to hate though is Bellatrix Lestrange from the Harry Potter books. I loved how Helena Bonham Carter brought her character to life in the movies. Thanks so much for the chance to win this awesome giveaway. I’ve loved Holly Black’s books since I was in high school. My best friend used to give me her newest books for my birthdays and I’d give her Melissa Marr’s newest for hers and we’d trade off when we’d finished. I’ve been so excited to read The Cruel Prince!

As much as I hated some of the cruel things he did I saw why he was the way he was and felt bad for him. It’s hard not to love him despite his actions. A character I love to hate though is Bellatrix Lestrange from the Harry Potter books. I hated her but the books wouldn’t be the same without her and I loved the way Helena Bonham Carter brought her character to life in the movies.
