I recently got home from BEA 2016, and had an amazing time. I recapped my adventures here — but now it’s time for what I’m sure you really want to know about. The books! (And the bags and swag, of course). Below, you’ll find a recap of all the books and goodies I picked up while I was at BEA 2016. AAAAAND … I have a contest for you! So keep reading to learn how YOU can win some of the books that were handed out at BEA this year.
The Books
First up, here are all of the signed YA & middle grade books I picked up at BEA this year:
Some of these were picked up and signed at some of the parties I attended; others I waited in line for at BEA. It was especially nice to finally meet Elizabeth Eulberg (The Great Shelby Holmes) in person, as we’ve worked together since her first book came out & when Novel Novice first launched. I was also really excited about Booki Vivat’s Frazzled, which is an illustrated middle grade. It was great to see some of my favorite authors again, who are always so kind to remember me, like Kami Garcia, David Levithan, Lauren Oliver, Maggie Stiefvater, and Adam Silvera — who, the last time I saw him at BEA, had not even announced his first book deal!
Here are the other YA books I picked up for review consideration:
The book I was MOST excited to receive was Ghostly Echoes by William Ritter, the third book in the Jackaby series. I actually read that book on my flight home & it was AWESOME!!! Look for a full review closer to the book’s release date in August.
And there were also some chapter samplers of these hotly-anticipated books that I snagged:
I am probably most excited about Strange the Dreamer, but Black Widow: Red Vengeance is close behind it!
I also got some new middle grade books that I’m really excited about, especially the new one from Raina Telgemeier:
I also got some picture books for our Novel Novice Junior features! Those in the first picture were signed by the authors.
The Swag
I picked up some fun swag while I was at BEA, too. A lot of publishers had some really gorgeous posters, which I had to pass on because I didn’t have a good way to get them home intact. But I did get some fun buttons, stickers, bookmarks, and other goodies:
The Bags
Okay, yes, these are technically swag, too. BUT, let’s be honest. The tote bags are one of the most exciting parts of BEA. The sizes, styles, fabrics, designs. And there were some pretty great ones this year. These are the most memorable bags I picked up this year:
In the time since I’ve returned home from BEA, some of my publishing contacts have sent me copies of books I also picked up at BEA — leading to a couple duplicates. So I’m sharing the wealth! I’ve put together a prize pack including some of those accidental duplicates, along with one of the coveted BEA tote bags and some swag. Here’s a peek:
The full prize pack includes:
- Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige
- The Lovely Reckless by Kami Garcia
- Love and First Sight by Josh Sundquist
- The Great Shelby Holmes by Elizabeth Eulberg
- Chapter sampler for Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
- Chapter sampler for Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
- Chapter sampler for Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
- A Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children tote bag
- Assorted bookmarks, stickers, etc. from BEA 2016

I can’t wait to read Carve the Mark! I love Veronica Roth and that cover is GORGEOUS.
Caraval! Sisters saving each other with a circus-esque background? I’m on board! (Got it, because there is a sailor.)
I’d love to meet Laini Taylor, not just because she writes great books, but think of all the great hair pics!
I can’t wait to read Caraval because I heard so many good things about it. The synopsis sounds intriguing. A couple of my friends have read it already and they claim the main character is strong and story is magical and mesmerizing. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the cover design is gorgeous!
A Torch Against The Night because I thought the first book was amazing and couldn’t put it down!
A Torch Against the Night because I have to see if Laia’s brother is rescued.
Shelby Holmes looks so cute!
I’m so excited for CARAVAL. Stephanie was my co-mentor in The Writer’s voice and she was so awesome and her book sounds positively amazing. I loved The Night circus and it kind of gives me that vibe. Also Torch against the night ❤ ❤
Thanks for the giveaway!
Ghostly Echoes since I’m currently reading the second one and I’m already finished with it!! So jealous you got to read it.
Ahh, another JACKABY fan! I can tell you GHOSTLY ECHOES will be well worth the wait! 😉
Oh definitely Stealing Snow! I’m a huge fan of Danielle Paige and I can’t wait to read that book!
And one author I would LOVE to meet in person would be Andrew Smith! His books are hilarious!
Love and First Sight as I love Josh’s work. Sounds like you had a fabulous time at BEA. I love seeing what everyone picked up and what books to add to my TBR. Thanks for the chance!
Dead or alive authors? I would probably most want to meet Jane Austen and Carolyn Keene. I have read and admired their stories my whole life.
I always said Maggie Stiefvater but I did get to meet her in November. Now I would have to say Leigh Bardugo because she seems like a sweet person who doesn’t let life get her down.
I would be thrilled to get Love and First Sight! Thank you so much for the chance!!
A Torch Against the Night.
Forgot to say why :(. Because the first one was SO good.
The Raven King because I have heard many, many good things about it.
Well there’s a tie between Heartless and Diabolic. I cannot wait to read them. Melissa Meyer is life. and Diabolic sounds intriguing.
