Sweet and sassy romance abounds in Summer of Supernovas by Darcy Woods, a charming debut YA novel that will make you swoon and cheer for love.
As the daughter of an expert astrologer, Wilamena Carlisle knows that the truth lies within the stars. So when she discovers a rare planetary alignment, she is forced to tackle her worst astrological fear – The Fifth House of Relationships and Love. But Wil must decide whether a cosmically doomed love is worth rejecting her mother’s legacy, when she falls for a sensitive guitar player hailing from the wrong side of the chart.
Debut author Darcy Woods explores love in all its complexities and how to best honor the loved ones who have passed before us, in a novel packed with both humor and heart.
I was worried that the plot for Summer of Supernovas would be too predictable — and while certain plot twists are, how the characters get there is filled with twists and surprises to keep you reading eagerly. It also doesn’t hurt that the chemistry between Wil and a certain charming young man practically oozes off the page. It’s consuming and palpable, and as a reader, you will root for them to make it work. I found myself racing through the book, reading late into the night, simply because I wanted to see how it would all come together. This is the kind of book that happily ever afters were made for, and it’s oh so satisfying when you get there. It’s not perfect; it’s a little messy and not everything is tidily resolved, but that’s part of what makes it a believable ending; it’s real. It’s honest.
Even Wil’s dedication to following her astrology chart is believable; she knows it seems crazy, but she has her own, good, solid reasons for doing so — and as a reader, you can buy into her reasoning. Plus, Wil is just a charming character — as are the other great people who populate this book. The boys are sweet and endearing; Wil’s grandmother is a hoot; her BFF Irina is vivacious and colorful and I wish she were my BFF, too. And the way these characters interact and connect is so meaningful; these relationships are really what give Summer of Supernovas such heart and verve.
The perfectly cosmic romance you need to kick-start the summer reading season, Summer of Supernovas is in stores tomorrow.

Young adult author Darcy Woods had three big loves in grade school: Reading, writing, and pizza day. Some things never change. She lives in Michigan with her madly supportive husband, two tuxedo cats (who overdress for everything) and a closet full of neatly organized shoes. Once upon a time, she served in a US Army aviation unit and threw live grenades. Now she throws words.
Darcy’s Golden Heart®-winning debut YA romance, SUMMER OF SUPERNOVAS, comes out from Random House/Crown May 10, 2016.
