Kami Garcia: Unbreakable Q&A Part 1

Today, we kick-off the first of our three-part exclusive interview with Unbreakable author Kami Garcia. We know Kami is SUPER busy writing the next books in the Legion Series, and working on a new Beautiful Creatures spin-off with co-author Margaret Stohl, AND being on book tour. So we really appreciate her taking the time to stop by and answer some questions for us.

kami garciaHow has your writing process changed with your first solo novel?

I love inspiration boards and beat sheets, and I use them a lot more when I write alone. (One entire wall in my office is an inspiration board.) But it also feels like writing blind because I don’t get the constant feedback from another person, which lets me know when I’m on the right track.

There’s a lot of great mythology at work in UNBREAKABLE. What sort of research went into the book?

My writing process always begins with imagery and research. It’s easier for readers to suspend disbelief when the foundation of the history you are presenting is true. I researched the Illuminati, Freemasonry, and related secret societies, as well as the history of the Catholic Church before I created the Legion of the Black Dove, my fictional secret society. Ghost hunting and paranormal research also play a key role in Unbreakable, so I read north of 50 books related to real haunted places in the US, ghost hunting techniques and equipment that ghost hunters use while conducting investigations. I was so honored when the co-creators and stars of Ghost Hunters, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, both offered quotes for Unbreakable. Readers who are interested in learning more about ghost hunting should check out the scores of books Jason and Grant have coauthored on the topic. You might want to read them with the lights on.

Tune in for part 2 of our Q&A on Wednesday!
