Bearing all the charm and hijinks you’d expect in a John Hughes movie, Ditched by Robin Mellom is a delightful new read that covers all the expectations, disappointments and surprises you’d expect from prom night.
In a night of fashion faux-pas, missed connections, and a 7-11 confessional, Ditched tells the story of high school senior Justina who agrees to a prom date with her BFF Ian. They’ve always just been friends, but lately Justina’s been noticing the little things about Ian that makes her question if they could be more. And it’s that question in her head that puts a lot of added pressure on prom night … and sets up one night of wild rides (including one very questionable vehicle).
Mellom has perfectly captured the pressure we put on ourselves as teens for prom night. We always raise our expectations beyond reality — and when they come crashing down, the night turns into a disaster. Ditched takes things to the extreme, but never once turns cartoonish or comical.
The characters in Ditched are the people you went to high school with; each one realistic and recognizable. Are the stoner kids and the popular girls a common cliche? Sure. But they’re all based in reality, and that’s why they work in Ditched.
Of course, tying the whole story together is the saga of Justina’s horribly stained and tattered prom dress (brilliant stroke of genius from the publisher’s design team, incorporating the dress throughout the book, by the way) — and the women in the 7-11 to whom she tells her sad story. These were some of my favorite moments in the book, as the women share their insight and knowledge, as well as coloring the pages with their brilliant personalities.
Ditched is a delightful prom night romp, filled with charming characters and one outrageous scenario after the next. Think Ferris Beuller meets Pretty in Pink.
Ditched is in stores today. Here is the official synopsis:
High school senior Justina Griffith was never the girl who dreamed of going to prom. Designer dresses and strappy heels? Not her thing. So she never expected her best friend, Ian Clark, to ask her.
Ian, who always passed her the baseball bat handle first.
Ian, who knew exactly when she needed red licorice.
Ian, who promised her the most amazing night at prom.
And then ditched her.
Now, as the sun rises over her small town, and with only the help of some opinionated ladies at the 7-Eleven, Justina must piece together — stain by stain on her thrift-store dress — exactly how she ended up dateless. A three-legged Chihuahua was involved. Along with a demolition derby-ready Cadillac. And there was that incident at the tattoo parlor. Plus the flying leap from Brian Sontag’s moving car…
But to get the whole story, Justina will have to face the boy who ditched her. And discover if losing out at prom can ultimately lead to true love.
Filled with humor, charm, and romance, Ditched: A Love Story by debut novelist Robin Mellom will have readers dreaming of love on their own prom nights.
