I was delighted by the charming, witty story in Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, and was thrilled to find it’s all there and more in the new sequel, Jessica Rules the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey.
The new book picks up after Jessica and Lucius have wed (read about their nuptials for free on Beth’s website) — as Jessica faces the challenges of life as a vampire princess/future queen and all the struggles that come along with that. But she’s really put to the test when another vampire is found murdered, and Lucius is named the prime suspect.
Once again, Fantaskey has written a charming, witty and delightful story with the characters I first fell in love with in Jessica’s Guide. But just as the relationship between Jessica and Lucius has matured and moved to the next level, so has their story.
In many ways, Jessica Rules the Dark Side straddles the line between young adult and adult fiction. The content is perfectly safe for younger teen readers, but her characters have matured and so the situations they face are more mature as well. Jessica isn’t just a teenager in love; she’s a wife and the future ruler of a serious clan of vampires. This development is what makes Jessica Rules the Dark Side such a success! It bears all the charm of the first book, while progressing naturally with the characters as they move on with their adult lives.
Jessica Rules the Dark Side is in stores tomorrow. Here is the official synopsis:
It’s one thing to find out you’re a vampire princess. It’s a whole other thing to actually rule. Newly married Jessica Packwood is having a hard enough time feeling regal with her husband, Lucius, at her side. But when evidence in the murder of a powerful elder points to Lucius, sending him into solitary confinement, Jessica is suddenly on her own. Determined to clear her husband’s name, Jessica launches into a full-scale investigation, but hallucinations and nightmares of betrayal keep getting in her way. Jessica knows that with no blood to drink, Lucius’s time is running out. Can she figure out who the real killer is—and whom she can trust—before it’s too late?
