Today, we are pleased to (a) kick-off our week-long feature on Silence by Becca Fitzpatrick — and (b) play host to one of the final stops on the official Silence Blog Tour!
Below, you’ll find our exclusive Q&A with Becca, but then keep reading for more on two contests happening for Silence, the third book in Becca’s Hush, Hush series.
Exclusive Q&A with Becca Fitzpatrick:
As a rule, I kiss with my eyes closed, but tonight temptation got the better of me, and I stole a glimpse.
We want to know — does this line still exist in the book & is it still the first sentence?
I remember that line! It got chopped. The whole opening scene that followed it got chopped. SILENCE now begins from a point of view other than Nora’s.
Even though you’re wrapping up Nora & Patch’s story, would you ever write another story set in this world? Maybe a spin-off about Detective Basso (my favorite!) or Vee or Marcie?
I love Detective Basso too! He definitely has his fair share of secrets. I don’t envision writing a spin-off. I have other, completely different projects I want to work on.
Through all of your whirlwind adventures as a published author, what’s been the most exciting experience? The strangest?
Wow, it’s really hard to narrow my most exciting moment down to one single event, but I always come back to holding my first book, HUSH, HUSH, in my hands for the very first time. My dream had finally come true! As for strangest experience…that was probably having a woman approach me in McDonald’s while I was traveling in a different state. I was wearing sweats, hadn’t showered, and was letting my kids run around before we got back in the car. She came over and said, “Excuse me, but are you Becca Fitzpatrick? I love your books!” I nearly choked on my French fries.
We were super excited to hear about a fourth book in the series! I know you were planning for SILENCE to be the final book, so we want to know, what changed your mind?
Two things changed my mind. First, I wanted to write a book set during Cheshvan, since it plays such a big role in the HUSH, HUSH series. Second, readers have been asking for a fourth book and I wanted to deliver!
Life after the HUSH, HUSH saga will include beginning a new story which, most likely, won’t contain any paranormal elements. I want to write a YA psychological thriller set in the Teton mountains of Wyoming.
And one of our Twitter followers asked, is Patch based on anyone real?
Patch’s character was inspired by a guy I knew a long time ago. And that’s all I’m going to say!
Another Twitter follower asked: Are there any bands/music artists who inspire your writing?
I need it quiet when I write, but I do listen to music when I’m plotting my books. That typically happens first thing in the morning when I’m out running or biking. I turn on my iPod and start brainstorming. The Rolling Stones, Journey, The Cars, and The Cure are some of my favorite bands.
And finally, a couple flash questions:
If they made a Becca Fitzpatrick candle, what would it smell like?
Definitely not eucalyptus! It’s one of my least favorite scents in the world. Maybe something clean and woodsy, like the mountains.
Confession: I don’t watch cartoons. My husband is in charge of taking our kids to all the Disney/Pixar movies.
Favorite book as a child?
Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder
