The Revenant by Sonia Gensler: Ghost Story Writing Contest

Our July Book of the Month, The Revenant by Sonia Gensler, crosses over many genres and themes — but at the very heart of the plot is a ghost story. So for this month’s writing contest, we want you to think creepy and spooky! Here are the details:

The Contest:

In 250-500 words, write a ghost story (or the beginning of a ghost story). It can take place in any time period, any location, etc. Just think of the different elements of what makes a good ghost story. Keep us on the edge of our seat! Thrill us!

And hey, if you need more pointers, tune in tomorrow, when we’ll feature different elements of the ghost story.

Once you’ve written your story, submit it along with the other important information in our The Revenant Ghost Story Writing Contest Entry Form.

The Prize:

Three (3) winners will each receive a copy of The Revenant, courtesy of Random House!

The Rules:

  • U.S. only
  • One entry per person
  • Stories should be 250-500 words each
  • Use proper grammar & spelling
  • Submit stories using the contest entry form.

The Deadline:

All stories & contest entries are due by midnight (PT) on Sunday, July 31st.

Questions? Leave ’em in the comments & we’ll reply!

  1. I started writing a ghost story a while ago, if there is a scene in it appropriate for this contest, can I use that as my entry?

    1. Most definitely! Just make sure you check the guidelines/rules before submitting. 🙂

  2. I’m not all too interested in winning this book, but I would like to write a ghost story. Maybe I’ll do it….

    1. Honestly, I can’t say. It takes some time to read through all the entries, and I’m just not sure when I’ll be able to get around to them. Hopefully sooner rather than later, but no idea on dates quite yet.

  3. I had emailed at the beginning of the month, had not heard who won the contest or seen any of the entries. Any idea yet who won?
