Blood Red Road: Dystopian Worlds Creative Writing Contest

All this week we’ve been featuring Blood Red Road by Moira Young — in stores Tuesday, June 7th — an outstanding new dystopian novel that really sets itself apart from the other dystopian books hitting store shelves.

One of the things that makes Blood Red Road so unique is its distinct voice and Moira’s original writing style. (See for yourself in this free excerpt available online from S&S). Blood Red Road is also unique in the stark, futuristic landscape that its main character Saba is forced to trek across in search of her brother.

So today, we’re excited to use Blood Red Road as our inspiration for a new creative writing contest that gives you a chance to try “dystopian” on for size.

The Contest:

We want you to create your own dystopian world. Imagine a future where things aren’t as perfect as we might have hoped.

Using your creative writing skills, describe a futuristic/dystopian society. What does it look like? Smell like? Feel like? What are people like there? What is the government like? What are society’s customs? What does the Earth look like?

Be creative in making up your own world, and in how you describe it. Feel free to write in 1st, 2nd or 3rd person. This could even be the beginning of a bigger story.

Entries should be 250-500 words in length, using proper grammar & spelling. Submit your short story using the Novel Novice Blood Red Road Creative Writing Contest Entry Form.

The Prizes:

Three (3) winners will each receive a copy of Blood Red Road, courtesy of Simon & Schuster!

The Rules:

  • U.S. Only
  • 1 entry per person
  • Use the contest entry form
  • Use proper grammar & spelling
  • 250-500 words

The Deadline:

We’re giving you extra time to write your stories.

Entries are due by midnight (PT) on Friday, June 17th.
