Lois Duncan’s Classic YA Thrillers Get a Modern Update!

These days, teens — and those of us who love teen reads — are very fortunate that YA books are not only becoming a much bigger deal, but the books hitting the YA shelves are even better than ever. But back in the day when “YA” wasn’t really a common term, there were still a few rock stores of the genre. One of these rocks stars was and always will be Lois Duncan.

She always had a knack for capturing the teen experience and combining it with edge-of-your-seat thrills and suspense. Now, Little Brown has teamed up with Duncan to update some of her most beloved books and bring them into the modern age.

Now available in stores, you can check out these fantastic, newly-packaged paperbacks of Duncan’s books — each text updated by Duncan herself with modern lingo & technology. If you’ve never read any of Duncan’s books, now is the perfect time to do so. I adore these updated versions of Duncan’s books. Her stories are still just as terrifying to read as ever before, and new readers will appreciate the contemporary updates.

Here’s a look at all of the updated titles:

Down a Dark Hall

Kit Gordy sees Blackwood Hall towering over black iron gates, and she can’t help thinking, This place is evil. The imposing mansion sends a shiver of fear through her. But Kit settles into a routine, trying to ignore the rumors that the highly exclusive boarding school is haunted.

Then her classmates begin to show extraordinary and unknown talents. The strange dreams, the voices, the lost letters to family and friends, all become overshadowed by the magic around them.

When Kit and her friends realize that Blackwood isn’t what it claims to be, it might be too late.

Summer of Fear

From the moment Rachel’s family takes in her orphaned cousin Julia, strange things start to happen. Rachel grows suspicious but soon finds herself alienated from her own life. Julia seems to have enchanted everyone to turn against her, leaving Rachel on her own to try and prove that Julia is a witch. One thing about Julia is certain-she is not who she says she is, and Rachel’s family is in grave danger.

Stranger With My Face

Laurie Stratton finally has everything a sixteen-year-old could ever want. But just as her perfect summer comes to a close, things start to unravel when her boyfriend insists he saw her out with another guy-when Laurie was really home sick! More mysterious sightings convince Laurie someone very real is out there, watching her. . . .

The truth reveals a long-lost sister who has spent the years growing bitter and dangerous. She has learned how to haunt Laurie, but the visits soon become perilous. She wants something from Laurie-her life!

  1. I have always loved “Stranger With My Face.” It was one of my favorite books as a teen and I revisit it every couple of years even now as an adult. It’s a terrific story and I am looking forward to reading the updated version.

  2. Wow! I’m very excited to hear Duncan’s book are getting an update. She is an amazing writer and I loved getting lost in stories! I always enjoyed: Summer of Fear, Killing Mr. Griffin, Ransom, The Third Eye and They Never Came Home. However, my FAVORITE has to be Gallows Hill!

Hopefully this modern update will encourage more people to pick up these books. A gifted writer, Duncan never fails to captivate me with her characters and plot!
