*Publisher’s Weekly shared the cover & first peek at Brian Selznick’s Wonderstruck, which expands on the illustrated novel format of Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret:

Scholastic Press has just released the cover art for Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick, winner of the 2008 Caldecott Medal for The Invention of Hugo Cabret. His new novel expands on the heavily illustrated format of the earlier novel, presenting the stories of two children living 50 years apart, a girl in 1927 and a boy in 1977, who each set out on a quest to find what is missing in their lives. Wonderstruck will be released simultaneously in the U.S., the U.K., New Zealand, Australia, and Canada on September 13.
Tracy Mack, executive editor of Scholastic Press, has been working with Selznick on his latest novel for three years. She says that in Wonderstruck the author “ups the ante and challenges himself to play with the form he created in The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and evolves the form further.” Where that book offers a single story told in words and pictures, she explains, “This novel tells two independent stories—one told in words, the other in pictures. The structure is wholly original, the transitions between stories are awe-inspiring, and how the two stories ultimately come together is tender and resonant.”

* Also this week, Random House announced details about the final book in Christopher Paolini’s Inhereitance books:

NEW YORK (AP) — The end is near for Christopher Paolini’s “Inheritance” cycle.

An imprint of Random House Children’s Books announced Wednesday that the fourth and final novel of the multimillion-selling fantasy series will be out Nov. 8. The book is called “Inheritance” and has an announced first printing of 2.5 million copies. The previous works are “Eragon,” “Eldest” and “Brisingr.” Worldwide sales for the series total 25 million copies, according to the publisher.

* A FOURTH movie in The Chronicles of Narnia series is coming to the big screen — The Magician’s Nephew:

The move would mean a return for the White Witch, played by Tilda Swinton in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, since Lewis’s later novel explains how she came to settle in Narnia. Even though her character was destroyed in the first film, The Magician’s Nephew goes back to a time before the first film and tells the story of how the White Witch originally came to Narnia. It is expected that Tilda Swinton will reprise the role.

The Magician’s Nephew is the sixth book published by Lewis, but is the first chronologically. It tells the story of how Narnia was created, revealing the origins of the wardrobe and other items first introduced in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

“We are starting to talk to Fox and talk to the CS Lewis estate now about the Magician’s Nephew being our next film,” said Michael Flaherty of Walden Media, which owns the screen rights to the Narnia series. “If we can all agree to move forward, then what we would do is find someone to write the script. So, it could still be a couple of years.”
