The Saturday Post: Anniversaries, Displays, Movies & Covers

This is our look back at the week’s biggest stories from the YA book world! Got a news tip? Share it in the comments!

* Scholastic celebrated its 90th anniversary Friday with a variety of activities both in New York City and abroad. The Empire State Building in NYC was even lit up in red last night for the big celebration:

Empire State Building glows red for Scholastic's 90th anniversary

Scholastic began on October 22, 1920 with the publication of The Western Pennsylvania Scholastic, a sports magazine for high school students. Ninety years later, Scholastic is now the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books — and is behind such well-known titles as Harry Potter, Shiver and yes, The Hunger Games.

To celebrate their 90th anniversary, Scholastic is launching a new global literacy campaign called “Read Every Day.” The effort hopes to show the importance of reading as a way for young people to succeed in the modern world.

* Powell’s Books in my very own Portland, Oregon has won a store visit by Suzanne Collins! Powell’s won Scholastic’s in-store display contest for their epic 17-foot cornucopia that they filled with books for the Mockingjay release this past summer:

Powell's created a 17-foot cornucopia display

Collins will appear at Powell’s Books in Portland, Oregon on Sunday, November 7th — after the store won Scholastic’s in-store display contest held in conjunction with the release of Mockingjay.

Participating stores were asked to create a display that reflected the look and spirit of Mockingjay — and Powell’s took that goal to heart, creating a 17-foot cornucopia filled with copies of Mockingjay. Powell’s surrounded the cornucopia with crates and supplies, and a couple of dummies dressed as dead tributes.

“We received a wide variety of creative and visually stunning entries to the Mockingjay display contest,” said Rachel Coun, Executive Director of Hardcover Marketing, Scholastic Trade. “But Powell’s entry, which included the centerpiece of a 17-foot cornucopia, really stood out!”

* Dakota Fanning is in talks to star in the movie adaptation of If I Stay by Gayle Forman. Readers, what do you think of her for the role?

* Rachel Hawkins unveiled the cover for the next book in her Hex Hall series, Demonglass — and it sure is pretty:

* Reelz Channel listed their “fan picks” for The Hunger Games movie, although I must confess that a lot of these seem random (if not completely off the mark) — and I have NOT heard most of these names buzzed about in the fandom. Still, take a look at their picks and let us know what you think.
