Sucks to Be Me Spotlight on: YA Books Central

You might be wondering why we’re featuring another YA book website during our May Book of the Month feature on the Sucks to Be Me series by Kimberly Pauley. Well, that’s because Kimberly is the force behind YA Books Central! That’s right, when she’s not busy writing hilarious books about teenage vampires, she’s running a fantastic website for other Young Adult books. (UPDATE: Kimberly recently handed over control of YABC to someone else, but she’ll always be the site founder!) And so, in honor of her Book of the Month feature here at Novel Novice, we wanted to highlight some of the cool features you can find on YABC!

So what is YA Books Central all about anyway? They say it best themselves on their “About Us” page:

This is, first and foremost, a place for people who love books. It started in 1998 as a basic stopover for people looking for information on young adult books and has since evolved into one of the largest sites targeted towards tween and teen readers. You can find book reviews, author interviews & bios, press releases, industry news and much more on both children’s and YA books.

What makes YABC so cool is that some of their regular reviews are written by an on-staff tween reviewer & an on-staff teen reviewer! Plus, readers can post their own reviews, as well. And you can search for just about any book or author on their site.

YABC also regularly features cool new book trailers, in addition to news about new books & the publishing industry.

Here’s another cool feature — book excerpts. They’ve compiled an amazing database of free (and legal!) excerpts from YA, Middle Grade and Children’s books — and have posted to links to where you can find them online! They’ve got everything from the popular Lemony Snicket books, to classics like Little Women and Sherlock Holmes.

Also, be sure to check out their author interviews, biographies & bibliographies.

Oh, and who doesn’t love free stuff? YABC has a page dedicated to their current & ongoing book giveaways. One of their coolest is their ongoing, monthly giveaway for a box of books! All you have to do is submit a review on YABC to be entered for the monthly drawing.

So head on over to YA Books Central and tell us in the comments — what’s your favorite part of their site?
