Hourglass by Claudia Gray

Fans of vampire fiction know that Edward and Bella have it pretty tough in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. And how about the drama plaguing Buffy and vampire-with-a-soul Angel in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

These dramatic, star-crossed romances pale in comparison to the troubles facing Lucas and Bianca in Claudia Gray’s best-selling Evernight series.

Spoiler alert if you’re new to the series: Lucas comes from a long line of vampire hunters. Bianca is a rare, born vampire — with a bunch of wraiths (ghosts) trying to stake their claim on her for helping make her birth possible in the first place.

And the stakes are higher than ever for Bianca and Lucas in Hourglass, the latest installment in Gray’s series.

Due in stores March 9th, Hourglass follows Bianca and Lucas after their dramatic escape from the Evernight Academy. At first, their main concern is keeping Bianca’s true identity a secret from the Black Cross vampire hunters they’ve teamed up with. But Bianca can’t escape her heritage — both vampire and wraith — for long.

Like all of the books in the Evernight series, Hourglass is a suspenseful page-turner. Gray has outdone herself with all the action, drama, love triangles, betrayals, twists and surprises. And nothing in this book is predictable — it’s a shocking delight, and the ending will leave you gasping in anticipation for the fourth book in the series.

What stands out the most, I think, in Hourglass is Bianca and Lucas’ unwavering love for each other. In the face of some of the most trying situations — all beyond their control — their dedication to each other holds fast. Both want what’s best for the other; neither tries to manipulate the other’s feelings or actions. Instead, they work as a team to try and beat the odds — and when things don’t go according to plan, each is willing to risk everything for the other.

Hourglass is, first and foremost, a love story. What makes it an interesting love story is seeing how Bianca and Lucas face the incredible, supernatural and sometimes heartbreaking situations they are faced with.

Afterlife will be the expected final book in the series. A release date has not been announced.

Here is the official synopsis for Hourglass, followed by the book trailer:

After escaping from Evernight Academy, the vampire boarding school where they met, Bianca and Lucas seek refuge with Black Cross, an elite group of vampire hunters. Bianca must hide her supernatural heritage or risk certain death at their hands. But when Black Cross captures her friend–the vampire Balthazar–all her secrets threaten to come out.

Soon, Bianca and Lucas have orchestrated Balthazar’s escape and are on the run, pursued not only by Black Cross, but by the powerful leaders of Evernight. Yet no matter how far they run, Bianca can’t escape her destiny.

Bianca has always believed their love could survive anything–but can it survive what’s to come?
