Welcome to the blog tour for the exclusive cover reveal of The Reece Malcolm List, coming February 2013 from Entangled Teen! Check out Tuesday’s post at Young Adult Anonymous to find out how my unique cover story started, and yesterday’s post at GReads! to see how I convinced my publisher to let me have a custom photograph shot. Thanks so much to Novel Novice for having me today!

The styling for any photograph is important, of course, but for the cover of The Reece Malcolm List, it was vital. The main character Devan is obsessed with clothes, fashion, style, etc. I had to make sure the cover would match her devotion.

I spent, uh, let’s-not-talk-about-how-long putting together a password-protected online lookbook just for myself, the model, the photographer, and the cover designer. I’m officially unlocking it so that you can check out the whole thing, but here are a few style guides I put together:

Luckily—VERY luckily, I had a feeling Cassandra, our model (more about her in tomorrow’s post!), had a not-entirely-dissimilar style as Devan, and she told me she could definitely put together some possibilities for me.

Looking through Cassandra’s clothes was like frigging Christmas. She had such a great selection of Devan-appropriate outfits that at a certain point I had to stop looking:

Now that we had a potential wardrobe, Jessie and I took the clothes to the park to photograph. Hey, if you ever want to feel weird in a park, how about you bring someone else’s clothes and take professional pictures of them?

Almost immediately we narrowed it down to two dresses:

By the way, if you’re not yet convinced how carefully the shoot was styled, those are four different possible pens for the model to hold. We had to make sure we picked the best one to show up on camera.

Both dresses were perfect for the character, but also very sweet. Plus our model is a pretty adorable person. Jessie pointed out that if we didn’t edge out the outfit somehow it would turn out too twee, which wouldn’t be fitting. So we focused on accessories—lots of jewelry to keep the outfit from becoming a sugary sweet mess. Thanks to a trip to Forever 21 as well as pooling what we already owned, we had A LOT to choose from:

Since our model’s feet would be bare for the shoot we wanted to make sure we picked a nail polish that looked great on film. I stepped in again as test shot subject:

Tune in tomorrow to A Good Addiction  for an exclusive interview with The Reece Malcolm List’s cover model, and come back to Novel Novice on Wednesday, June 13, for an exclusive reveal of The Reece Malcolm List’s cover!
