A Thousand Pieces of You Multi-Verse Writing Contest

For our November Book of the Month contest, we asked you to write a 250-500 word piece describing or taking place in an alternate universe. The winner is Stephanie Parke and here is her winning entry:
Rachel smiled softly and flipped her hair over her shoulder as she walked. She made sure she showed the perfect amount of ankle and breast as she led the man back to her room. He’d been so eager to follow her out the door and Rachel quite liked being the hunter instead of the prey.
The alley was dark but she wasn’t afraid. She was a time officer and routinely handled serial killers like this one, sexual predators. She had been selected from a long list of applicants and she enjoyed it, enjoyed catching the psychos. The door creaked sounding like a scream in the silence of the slums. The room in the heart of Whitechappel reeked, with cheap furniture and a bed that sagged in the middle. The man cleared his throat and motioned her forward trying to play his part, but she knew better.
The door shut and Rachel made sure to keep her back to the man inside the room. She waited a breath before turning to face him and was not at all surprised to see him in her personal space. His eyes gleamed and for anyone else it would have been terrifying. He wrapped his fingers around her throat as he pulled her to the bed and pushed her down.
“Please don’t hurt me.” Rachel said with false fear, trying her best to pretend to be afraid. He held her down and let all pretense of civility go as the knife in his hand gleamed. He laughed evilly as he wrapped one harry hand around her throat, running the knife over her. She could see he got off on it, the way he caressed the knife, because his smile widened.
Rachel pried his hand free twisting his arms behind his back. He screamed as he felt his shoulders snap as she pushed him off. She smiled as she held both hands in one of her own and stood. She tisked as she looked at him, thinking no one would be afraid of him if they could see the coward now. She bent the knife in two and tossed it behind her as she crushed his neck with a quick clench of her fist. He gurgled until the light faded from his disbelieving eyes.
Rachel threw him down and wiped her hand on her skirt before she opened her bag. She took out the syringe and opened the panel in her neck injecting the aether into the port there. As a half human-half clockwork, she needed to refuel every few hours or so. She shook her head distributing the aether through her body, feeling the surge as her clockwork mechanisms sighed with contentment. She slid back the panel on her wrist pushing the button signaling the time crimes unit, letting them know that her job was done. “Bastard” she said fiercely as she kicked the body lying on the floor. She smiled knowing that no one would ever need to fear Jack the Ripper again.
Congrats again to all of our winners!
