Today’s post is a bit spoiler-y, so if you haven’t read Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi yet, turn away now. If you HAVE read it, keep reading beyond the jump for some fun superhero comparisons!
One of the first things I noticed when reading Shatter Me is the X-Men like qualities that come into play towards the end of the book when Juliette arrives at Omega Point.
Why?
You have a group of talented individuals- Each possesses a unique & supernatural talent
- The talented members of Omega Point are eerily similar to the members of the X-Men
- Omega Point also helps teach its members how to hone and use their skills, much like Professor X’s school
- The members of Omega Point are united in a just cause
- Likewise, a more sinister organization is also seeking similarly talented individuals to join their cause
In short, they’re all superheroes — who have yet to discover their full potential. And, you know, the snappy wardrobe is still in the works. (Though Juliette pretty much gears up in her superhero garb by the end of Shatter Me).
Of course, in X-Men, the members possess their talents due to a genetic mutation — and the reason for Juliette’s talent and the other talents within Omega Point are still unknown.
A similar group of X-Men like individuals are featured in Hourglass by Myra McEntire. Can you think of any others? Share your observations about these similarities in the comments below!
