Countdown to Dark Eden: Top 5 Scary Movies

Today, we’re kicking off a week-long countdown to the release of Dark Eden by Patrick Carman. This super-spooky book comes out on Halloween, so to celebrate, we’ve picked Pat’s brain for his scariest favorites. Today, we’re talking about movies!

Patrick Carman’s Top 5 Scary Movies:

1. The Shining – I’ve stayed the night at Timberline Lodge, where the movie was filmed. I did not sleep.

2. Paranormal Activity – My 16 year old watches them first, then we watch them together so she knows right when I’m going to scream. Unnerving but special dad-daughter time.

3. The Grudge – I’ve actually never seen this movie. The trailer is so scary I can’t imagine watching it.

4. Hotrod – this is my go-to guilty pleasure. I love Andy Samberg SO much. No matter how many times I watch, when he’s about to jump the mail delivery truck on a moped at the beginning of the movie, I’m so scared my hands are shaking. Best. Crash. Ever.

5. Alien – I saw Alien when I was like ten. My dad was out of town and my mom didn’t understand that taking me and my brother to the drive in to watch a monster burst out of a man’s stomach was a bad idea. I have never been the same since.

Meanwhile, here’s more about Dark Eden:

Fifteen-year-old Will Besting is sent by his doctor to Fort Eden, an institution meant to help patients suffering from crippling phobias. Once there, Will and six other teenagers take turns in mysterious fear chambers and confront their worst nightmares—with the help of the group facilitator, Rainsford, an enigmatic guide. When the patients emerge from the chamber, they feel emboldened by the previous night’s experiences. But each person soon discovers strange, unexplained aches and pains. . . . What is really happening to the seven teens trapped in this dark Eden?

Patrick Carman’s Dark Eden is a provocative exploration of fear, betrayal, memory, and— ultimately—immortality.
