For me, picking out a new book is a lot like picking out a new outfit – I usually go with the tried and true staples I know I’ll love, and occasionally throw in something surprising to mix things up a little.
When it comes to gathering up your beach reads for summer, this approach can be especially rewarding – after all, you want an easy breezy book that’s fun and familiar – the perfect side dish to a day of relaxing on the sand, in the sun.
Luckily, my batch of go-to chick lit authors does not disappoint this summer, as a few of the favs are coming out with new, and what I expect to be, delightful pieces of literature to throw along in your totally awesome tote.
Candace Bushnell – Summer and the City
Available Now
Ms. Sex and the City herself regales us with the coming-of-age Carrie Bradshaw tales: Part 2 – and really, who doesn’t want to take the toast of Manhattan on a trip to the beach?
Jen Lancaster – If You Were Here
Available Now
Her first foray into fiction, the witty-as-all-hell bestseller rose to the literary ranks for her laugh-out-loud memoirs, which arguably boast some of the best book titles I’ve ever encountered, i.e. Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office. A novel about a couple buying and renovating their first home in the suburbs, I predict that Lancaster’s snarky sense of humor will make this probably closer-to-the-truth imaginary story shine.
Sarah Strohmeyer – Kindred Spirits
Available June 30th
From what I have gleaned already having read a series of Strohmeyer’s selections, it seems as though she specializes in illuminating the intricacies of female friendships and detailing the complex bonds women develop with each other through the good, the bad and the ugly. Her latest looks like it will serve up a similar style with the story centering around a set of PTA pals who share more than just lemon martinis.
Jennifer Weiner – Then Came You
Available July 12th
This lady is responsible for my unwavering love of Chick Lit, and you better bet I religiously read the gems written by this brilliant woman who started it all. I can always count on Weiner to add some substance to my summer reading, as she has mastered the art of entertaining and engaging her readers with thought-provoking narratives. I am looking forward to meeting another cast of characters whose worlds will most likely collide in the most unexpected of ways.
Beth Harbison – Always Something There to Remind Me
Available July 19th
Harbison is one of my newest and most delectable discoveries- her stories are vibrant and vivacious – the perfect antidote if you’re already suffering from a case of the summertime blues. A look into that ever-painful first love, her newest explores those haunting “what ifs” that come with the territory of mourning your first failed relationship.
