Why We’re Excited About Graphic Novels …

You may have noticed a few weeks ago, that we had a few posts about graphic novels.

You may have been thinking, But Novel Novice is a YA book website? What are they doing talking about Batman and other caped crusaders?

Well, the thing is, we’re a site dedicated to encouraging reading and education among teen readers. Sure, we focus mainly on Young Adult lit. But not everyone is a fan of YA — and in fact, a lot of guys and reluctant readers find their way to a bookstore by starting with graphic novels.

What’s more, graphic novels aren’t “just comic books.” They have a lot of value. They are just another means of telling a story, and graphic novels tell really good stories — plus, they come with some incredible artwork. (I mean, have you looked at a graphic novel recently? There are some true masterpieces out there!)

And let’s not forget about the cool graphic novel adaptations some popular YA books are starting to get — like Twilight and The Mortal Instruments. Or how about Frank Beddor’s Hatter M. graphic novels spin-off of his popular trilogy, The Looking Glass Wars. There’s even graphic novels for kids, like the popular Babymouse series from Matt Holm & Jennifer Holm.

Heck, there’s even a Pride & Prejudice graphic novel! Jane Austen!

Also, please tell me I’m not the only girl out there who thinks superheroes and comic book movies are awesome. I mean, did you see Iron Man? (Yes, I’m one of those people — I get excited about comic book movies & comic book movie trailers & comic book movie news!)

So that’s just some of the reasons why we’re hoping to begin featuring more and more graphic novels here at Novel Novice.

If you or someone you know could help us review graphic novels & write more posts about graphic novels, send us an email at sara.novelnovice@comcast.net — we want to build our staff of graphic novel gurus!

In the meantime, here are some links & recent news tidbits related to graphic novels that have ME excited, at least. And I think you should check them out:

* Have you seen the great products coming from Bluewater Productions lately? They’re the folks behind the FEMALE FORCE and FAME graphic novel series, among others. Some of their most recent biographical comic books have included Justin Bieber, Taylor Lautner and (coming soon) Betty White.

* Marvel comics get a TRON makeover. I don’t know about you guys, but I am so. freaking. excited. to see Tron: Legacy when it hits theaters this December. So to celebrate the movie’s upcoming release, Marvel Comics recently created artwork featuring characters like Spiderman and Wolverine in a Tron-style. Here’s their version of Iron Man:

* Speaking of Marvel Comics, they’ve also teamed up with ESPN for some cool NBA graphic novel action. What a cool way to get sports fanatics to turn off the TV for ten seconds and read something!

* Were you a fan of the short-lived Joss Whedon TV series Dollhouse? Well good news for you! Dark Horse comics is in the process of creating a series of Dollhouse graphic novels! Dark Horse has a great history of working well with Whedon — they’re the team behind the popular (and honestly, pretty epic) Buffy the Vampire Slayer graphic novel series, including Buffy Season 8.

* Need some Halloween-inspiration? MTV Geek shows us the top 10 “Geek-ily Awesome Halloween Costumes,” many of which come right from the pages of your favorite graphic novels. (Although I must confess I’m a bit partial to their Green Man costume idea, from the TV show “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”)
