Creative Writing Prompt #14
Social Media Musings
I’m gonna go out on a limb and bet that you’re a Facebook and/or Twitter user. Maybe you even have your own blog. Chances are, there is some sort of social media in which you’re involved… even if it’s only commenting on a site like Novel Novice.
Today, “eavesdrop” on your friends and acquaintances. Spend an hour looking through their online profiles. Take note of the most interesting status updates or 140-character musings. Write down the best and worst comments, whether they’re one word, a paragraph long, or even a notice of a recent group they joined.
After you’ve collected at least a page worth of material, review it. What kind of poem can take shape from these “borrowed” words? Perhaps you can poke fun at the pervasiveness of social media in your poem, or mock funnily named activities like Tweeting. Maybe you can get on the bandwagon about narcissism and how people really do talk about themselves much more now because of these online communities. Or maybe there’s something beautiful and fascinating that can be derived from these mumblings and rumblings and exclamations of cyberspace. Explore.
