Gaston Leroux’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’ gets a stage sequel

True confession time: I am a musical theater geek.

I performed in middle and high school, and though I’ve gotten pickier lately, I still enjoy seeing a really great production live on the stage.

I’m particularly a sucker for Andrew Lloyd Webber — especially his smash hit Phantom of the Opera, based on the Gaston Leroux novel. I saw this production a few times in San Francisco when I used to live in the Bay Area (and the show was a staple in the city for several years).

Now, a musical sequel Love Never Dies is set to make its worldwide premiere in London.

I confess, I thought this was sort of a silly idea when I first heard about it … but the more I learn, the more I really, really want to see it!

Below, you’ll find an official music video for one of the show’s staple songs, performed by Canadian actor Ramin Karimloo (Phantom) and the official synopsis for the show, plus some links. Then, share your thoughts on the show & the concept of a musical sequel in the comments!

Music Video: “Til I Hear You Sing”

Official Synopsis:

The principal characters of The Phantom of the Opera continue their stories in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s LOVE NEVER DIES.

Ten years after the mysterious disappearance of The Phantom from the Paris Opera House, Christine Daaé accepts an offer to come to America and perform at New York’s fabulous new playground of the world – Coney Island.

Arriving in New York with her husband Raoul and their son Gustave, Christine soon discovers the identity of the anonymous impresario who has lured her from France to sing.

This brand-new show is a roller coaster ride of obsession and intrigue…in which music and memory can play cruel tricks… and The Phantom sets out to prove that, indeed, LOVE NEVER DIES.

  1. I have such a HUGE smile on my face and I’m trying to hold back the squeals.

I adore “The Phantom of the Opera” and I’m so excited that there’s going to be a sequel!!! And the singers – WOW. The guy playing the Phantom has totally blown me away, and I’m so glad that Sierra is playing Christine – she was awesome as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway.

I definitely think I’ll be purchasing the soundtrack. It could be a while before the show gets to the States… but you never know!

    1. I am SO jealous you got to see “The Little Mermaid” on Broadway … that is my all-time favorite Disney movie!!!

And I think “Love Never Dies” is coming to NY in November.
