
Last week here at Novel Novice, we explained why the hit TV show Lost is a lit fan’s dream: It’s chock-full of literary references! Here’s some of what we said:
Throughout the series, the show has made references and allusions to some of literature’s greatest works. These subtle allusions make a lit geek like me supremely happy. This is not a show that tries to dumb down its material. In fact, it challenges audiences to pick up a great book and do some research.
Now, it seems others in the blog-o-sphere are picking up on this … in fact, here’s an excerpt from a report on MediaBistro:
All weekend, literary television fans should watch the new Lost Season Six trailer really, really slowly. In a burst of images, the trailer reveals some fresh footage from the cult television show.

Season Six of the popular program premieres on Feb. 2, and fans will finally find out what happened to the survivors of an airplane crash on a mysterious island.
Here’s an excerpt from the Stafford interview: “The books are essential. The second season was the first time they came out a head of time actually told viewers that they would flash a book and they should watch for it…in the beginning of season two…Desmond chucks a whole bunch of things into his backpack, one was a copy of the book, ‘The Third Policeman.’ This was a book that came out in the 1960s by an Irish writer [Flann O’Brien]. I interviewed an editor at that publishing house and they sold 20,000 copies of that book in the weeks leading up to the episode.”
