Mockingjay: A shopping guide for fans

We all know where to get Twilight stuff (uhm, everywhere?!) but what about The Hunger Games? You might have to dig a little deeper, but it’s out there, and with the upcoming release of Mockingjay, we predict this stuff will soon be flying out the doors.

Because we love The Hunger Games and we want you to be able to show yours, too, we’ve compiled a shopping guide with everything from pins to stamps, goblets to games — we’ve got it covered. We’ve also got a list of books that THG fans might also like.

Hot Topic

Hot Topic is now offering a variety of t-shirt designs for The Hunger Games. One is basic black, with artwork from the cover of the first book. There are two different versions bearing the phrase “Down with the Capitol!” — very appropriate for the release of Mockingjay. Another t-shirt declares “District 13 Tribute.” It’s likely Hot Topic will continue adding to its collection of Hunger Games merchandise, as well. Fans have told us you can find goodies like bracelets, buttons, bookmarks, keychains and some jewelry in Hot Topic stores, as well — although it’s not available on the Hot Topic website. But if you search “Hunger Games” at Amazon.com, some of the NECA products do come up.

Zazzle

I have no monetary interest in zazzle, but they have –hands down — the best selection of THG stuff with the most clever graphics and phrases. One of my favorites is “I See Dead Tributes,” obviously a rip from the 1999 movie, The Sixth Sense. Items include shirts (which run around $20 each), shoes, magnets, key chains, pins, mouse pads, hoodies, hats, a calendar, tote bags and even a skateboard … and an apron?

Etsy

Etsy, where everything is handmade, seems to be a book-lovers’ paradise. You can always find something unusual and unique for the obscure and not-so-obscure book, including The Hunger Games. There are a number of artists who have been inspired to create earrings, ankle bracelets, and of course, mockingjay pins. There are several charm bracelets available, but one of my favorites is this one (above left) by ColdHandsWarmArt, featuring an arrow, the number 12 to represent District 12, and a delicate little primrose pendant, which is pretty self-explanatory. It costs $15.

Another great (and unique) item I found on Etsy was a hand-made rubber stamp (right). I know, I know, it sounds kind of weird, but I’m a scrapbooker and you sure can’t get anything like this in a store. It would be great for all sorts of projects (THG party anyone? Use it on paper napkins, invitations, favors … ). It’s made by dragonflycurls and costs $10. There’s only one, so you might want to jump on that or ask her VERY nicely to make more!

Other noteworthy Etsy items include Peeta’s locket, a beautiful mockingjay necklace, a Rue anklet (so pretty!) and a set of 12 glass water goblets etched with the word “TRIBUTE.” Tres unique.

Board game

Yes Virginia, there is a board game. It debuted Aug. 11. Getting it, however, is a bit difficult. Some online retailers only took orders for a short time, but others are still offering The Hunger Games: Training Days. Funagain Games has it for $19.99; Comics and Card Supplies has it for a penny more.

If you like The Hunger Games

If you just can’t get enough — or are devastated that the series is coming to a close — here are some other books (via Borders) that may help take the edge off the heartbreak:

  • The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson
  • The Dead and Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer
  • Chosen by Ted Dekker
  • Unwind by Neal Shusterman
  • Witch and Wizard by James Patterson
  • The Line by Teri Hall
  • Impossible by Nancy Werlin
  • Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

For the comments: Have you gotten something we didn’t mention? What was it and where did you find it?

  1. I can’t believe you didn’t include Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy on you book list! The Knife of Never Letting Go, The Ask and The Answer, and Monsters of Men.

After my 8th grade- reluctant readers (all boys) finished Catching Fire I directed them to The Knife of Never Letting Go. A huge hit.

Monsters of Men is out in England right now and due out in the States this fall, although, if you are impatient and have the money, you can order it from Amazon.uk, as one of my 8th graders did!
