Sprinkles & Secrets: Kate Messner’s Funeral Cookies

We’re almost there — Sprinkles & Secrets by Lisa Schroeder comes out next week! But to tide you over until then, we bring you yet another sweet treat. Today’s delectable comes from author Kate Messner, author of The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z and the upcoming dystopian, Eye of the Storm.

Kate’s recipe actually comes from her first book, which is really cool! Here’s what Kate had to say about Nonna’s Funeral Cookies:

In The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z., Gianna’s grandmother (she calls her Nonna) is the heart of the family, in so many ways. When Gianna is stressed out because she’s left her 7th grade leaf collection project to the last minute, it’s Nonna who helps her settle down and get moving. And it’s Nonna who’s always there with a sweet treat, too. Her specialty? Funeral cookies! They’re Italian wedding cookies to the rest of the world, but because Nonna always makes them to share when there’s a wake at the family’s funeral parlor, they’ve come to be known as “Nonna’s Funeral Cookies” at Gianna’s house. Here’s a link where you can download the recipe and try them yourself!

Kate Messner is an award winning author and middle school English teacher whose titles include E.B. White Read Aloud Medalist The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z., Sugar and Ice, and the forthcoming dystopian weather novel, Eye of the Storm, all from Bloomsbury/Walker. She also writes the Marty McGuire chapter book series with Scholastic and picture books, including Sea Monster’s First Day and Over and Under the Snow with Chronicle. Learn more at Kate’s website!
