Welcome to Novel Novice’s Writing Prompts! Reading and writing go hand-in-hand: reading makes you a better writer, and writing makes you a better reader. Whether you’re aspiring to be a novelist, just having fun, or interested in trying your hand at writing, we welcome you to join in.
Here’s how it will work:
- Prompts will be posted on the 1st of the month, every other month, Feb-Oct.
- Stories will be due 6 weeks later, on the 14th of the following month.
- Stories will be posted on the website for everyone to read, so that we can enjoy each other’s work and learn from each other.
There will be no judging, voting, or winners. The goals of these writing prompts are:
- To have fun
- To improve your writing skills
- To share your writing with others
We’re changing up the writing prompts a little bit in 2012. Rather than a “lesson” every other month, we’re going to have open-ended prompts to get your imagination turning.
You can write fan fiction stories or your own original stories. It’s all for fun and practice because, of course, the number one way to be a better writer is to simply write more.

I think this is a fantastic way to explore my writing. Can’t wait to try it!
When will all the entries be posted? The first of the month as well?
Yes, I’ve gotten a little behind in posting the entries. Planning for today or this weekend. Sorry!
No, worries. I was just curious. Love the new writing prompt. Dialogue is my weak spot.
This is an amazing way to discover your writing talents!

hopefully this is something that’ll get my mind off of alot of other things that i’m still stressing about…so this is something that i would like to try!!!
I think this is a really amazing way to discover your writing talents. I, of course, just found out about this on google so I missed the due date. When is the next prompt? I would love to try it. Is there a certain age or anything? I’m thirteen, will I still be able to participate?
Sure, anyone is welcome to participate.
I’m posting the dialogue writings on Monday and the next prompt will be up June 1.
Hi,
I just found your site and I love the idea of participating…I would like to read the submissions but I don’t see how to get to them…am I missing something?
I just added links to this page. Thanks for your suggestion.
So far only the dialogue prompt entries are posted.
Thanks! I’m wondering if instead of submitting the entries to the email provided, if people could click on “submissions” and leave the link to their writing as a reply…that way they would be posted immediately for everyone to read. Just a thought.
We did consider that, but decided that we prefer the entries coming directly to us first. I also considered posting the entries as they come in, but I don’t want them to get lost in the shuffle of the other blog posts, either. But thanks for your input, we do appreciate it and consider all suggestions.
I would like to join? I’m an amazing writer, my teacher Lisa found this sight for me and told me to try it. I have recently writen a past experience paper, I got an “A” and a 1st place prize! I am also interested in becoming a writer, I’m currently working on an autobiography. What should I do?
HannaDawn,
Right now we’re preparing for NaNoWriMo. You can learn more about NaNoWriMo at the official website here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/ and you can catch up on all our posts here: http://novelnovice.com/tag/nanowrimo
I wish this would have been around when I started writing! Great idea and it sounds like so much fun!
