may2013 botm banner

Today for our May Book of the Month feature, we want to take a look at the hilarious book trailer for The Hero’s Guide to Storming the Castle by Christopher Healy (whose voice you may or may not recognize in this video):

The Hero’s Guide to Storming the Castle is in stores now!

hero's guide 2 high resPrince Liam. Prince Frederic. Prince Duncan. Prince Gustav. You remember them, don’t you? They’re the Princes Charming who finally got some credit after they stepped out of the shadows of their princesses – Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White, and Briar Rose – to defeat an evil witch bent on destroying all their kingdoms.

But alas, such fame and recognition only last so long. And when the princes discover that an object of great power might fall into any number of wrong hands, they are going to have to once again band together to stop it from happening – even if no one will ever know it was they who did it.

Christopher Healy, author of the acclaimed The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom, takes us back to the hilariously fractured fairy-tale world he created for another tale of medieval mischief. Magical gemstones, bladejaw eels, a mysterious Gray Phantom, and two maniacal warlords bent on world domination – it’s all in a day’s work for the League of Princes.

Best of 2011: Our Favorite YA Book Trailers of the Year

We here at Novel Novice love a good book trailer, and this year it seems as if the bar has really been raised. We are increasingly impressed with the quality and beauty of these book trailers.

So as we mark the end of 2011, here are our top 5 favorite book trailers of the year:

1. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Hands-down, the best book trailer I’ve ever seen. This production’s professional behind the scenes crew is obvious in every aspect. Every time I watch this video, I want to re-read  the book:

2. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

As gorgeous as the book itself, the trailer for A Monster Calls is beautiful and haunting and perfectly evokes the emotions you’ll feel while reading it:

3. Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley

A quiet trailer that perfectly matches the mood of the book. Whaley and some friends put together this video on a shoestring budget, but you’d never know it based on the quality of this trailer. We especially love the blurb quoted at the 1:13 mark:

4. Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver

The custom song written for this trailer is catchy and haunting, and you’ll be glad there’s a free download available because it will be stuck in your head. But the animation is also charming — and though the video is a bit on the long side for a book trailer, it is lovely to look at:

5. City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

It’s hard to choose our favorite book trailer from Vania of VLC Productions, but this one wins because not only is it a thrill to watch — but it also generated a huge fan fervor. The weekend Vania shot this trailer, it became a trending topic on Twitter. It also gave us the outtake from the DSAS:
